At Home With Treasure Bryen MacIntyre has been around beautiful jewelry, watches and gems of all descriptions. He’s been working with fine troves of treasure for 30 years, having learned the art from well respected professionals. “This is not something you learn out of books.” he says. “You need to have ‘hands-on’ experience, learning how to work metal, how to judge diamonds and other gems, getting to know fine arts, how to appraise the value of all of these elements. It’s not something you can even go to school to learn . . . I was fortunate, having a huge knowledge base from the professionals I worked with; based on this background and knowledge base I struck out on my own.” Today, MacIntyre has a comfortable, private office where he works by

Rancho Santa Fe Road, San Marcos. “We mostly deal in diamonds, jewelry, and fine watches.” he says. “I have a huge base of buyers across the country so if we can’t find a buyer for a piece locally, chances are we can locate a buyer in another market. We know each other. They trust me. It’s not at all unusual for me to call a buyer in another market, tell him what I have, what the price is, and he or she will wire me the funds for the piece, sight unseen. They trust my word and my reputation for being able to accurately appraise a piece.” “I also pay more for pieces because I have a more select group of buyers who, in turn, pay higher prices for desirable pieces. So, we benefit the seller and we find fine pieces for the buyer . . . it’s a win-win for everyone.” Sometimes, on estate items, we may have a very valuable item but we just don’t have a buyer locally. We’ll explain the options to the seller. If they’d like us to place it with a buyer nationwide . . . we can do that. If they want to keep it in the county, we can do that too. If there is not a market for something, we recognize time is money and we advise the seller of that as well. We are fair, we are courteous, and we are conscious of our seller’s time. We treat you the way we’d want to be treated. If a seller has a beautiful Lladro statue but it has a slight imperfection or damage, we will point that out to them . . . and give them a realistic appraisal of what the art is really worth. Having been in the business for 30 years we’ve seen a lot of fine
jewelry, diamonds, watches, works of art. We don’t claim to know
it all . . .but we know a lot about estate sale merchandise. We belong
to a number of organizations; we interact with each other and have a good
handle on what the market is. We also do custom designs. My jeweler will create or recreate a piece exactly the way a buyer wants it. We are local, we have a local office, and we meet by private appointment . . . for people who know what they want . . . to buy, or to sell. If someone wants to liquidate jewelry they inherited, we’ll help them. Same with watches. If someone wants to upgrade . . . we’ll help them with that as well.
